Note that the original was not divided
into chapters, only two sections.
I divided it into Webpage "Chapters"
to make the web pages smaller.
Some may think that God must not like Thomas Paine but Benson J. Lossing, LLD, in his book, "Eminent Authors," says that, while Paine was in prison in Paris writing the major portions of The Age of Reason, "He was saved by singular provence. Every night an officer passed along rows of cells in the prison and with a piece of chalk, marked the doors from which prisoners were to be taken to the scaffold. Paine's door happened to be open at the time and it was marked on the inside. When it was closed for the night, the fatal sign was not visible, and he escaped."
