Dave Havir, AW comments

From the Big Sandy church bulletin
News that COG Big Sandy pastor Dave Havir is facing possible heart bypass surgery this week. Dave is one of the good guys, we wish him well.

Comments are now active on AW. They were turned off when the blog went into hibernation six years ago. In doing the reboot, I discovered around sixty (60!) unpublished comments from 2009 and 2010 that were not forwarded to my email address. Included were some from Leonardo, Dennis Diehl and my old cobber Jorg Heinz. Belated (very belated!) apologies. I believe they were automatically published when the system was reset. Comments for the time being will be published with no wait for moderation. We'll see how it goes.

Basically, and this is from occasionally reading his articles in the Journal, Dave teaches "diet" Armstrongism. But, he appears to be making some baby steps in the right direction. If the Tkach's had been so cautious with the much needed corrections, perhaps the church could have been salvaged rather than splintering into an ineffective mass of confusion and ego.

I'm sorry to hear about Dave's health challenges. May he have a good outcome from the surgery and heal up quickly! I consider Dave a long-time friend. Even knowing what a bit of a radical I am :-) he has always been very supportive of my various outreaches, and invited me to offer seminars at his group's FOT site in years past.

As a matter of fact, Dave is THE main reason I originally put up my Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion website clear back in 2001! I had been doing research and accumulating documentation for it for a long time, but dragging my feet about actually getting around to making the website. I visited with him at a regional independent COG gathering in Chicago that year in the early summer, and told him of my plans for the possible site. He got very excited and said, "You MUST create that site as soon as possible! And you MUST include on it information about David J Smith!" Smith, also known, among those who knew about his ministry, as the Waxahatchie Wacko (HQ was in that Texas town), was making lots of inroads into the exWCG circles. As per usual, he was the "Only mouthpiece of God on Earth today." And preached that ALL the COG splits, except his own, were controlled by the Illuminati.

I went home and had the website up and running by September. And indeed I included a profile of Smith. I've had over a million visitors to that site by now, and actually, although people come looking for information on everything from the Seventh Day Adventist Church to Speaking in Tongues and the Prosperity Gospel, my website stats showed that the Smith page was often the top draw in any given month for the first decade or so! He died not long ago.

I have been long grateful to Dave for being so enthusiastic about the Field Guide, and pressuring me to get on with it!
